THROWBACK FRIDAY: “Superdaddy II: It Is Time, Part One” The One Where a Dad Tells a Story to His Kids Via Email While on Deployment, not-poetry by Stephen Fuller in Anticipation of the Writers Workshop Tomorrow

This was the first part of the Superdaddy II story written for my kids when I was on a deployment down to the Caribbean and Pacific Oceans supporting an operation to interdict drugs and smugglers leaving Colombia bound for the United States. Our part of the mission was successful; we seized over a half billion dollars worth of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana and arrested twenty criminals. Our crew also achieved unprecedented success with 100% professional qualifications as both officer and enlisted surface warfare specialists; and they coalesced as a team in a way any dad would be super proud. As I wrote at Fullbeard this week, some of the successes were epic, and this deployment sure was one of them. It also brought back a character born 5 years earlier on another deployment… Superdaddy! A story could never replace presence, but it was the best I could do. Part 1

A white haired man sat slumped over in his desk chair staring at a giant computer monitor. On the screen, were three dimensional images of two spinning earths – nearly identical copies, only one seemed to be spinning backwards.

“It is time,” the old man whispered in a worn out raspy voice. He opened a locked drawer that contained 7 small red buttons and a larger 8th one. Each button had a continent engraved in white into its face. The larger, had the earth. He put his finger on the larger button.

After one last deep breath, he buried his face in his right hand then pressed down the earth button with his left. A red light began to spin in the room as each of the red buttons flashed.

The computer screened flickered three times then went blank.
