This Place, By Donna Matthews

Let’s experience a poetry form today called Trenta Sei Poetry. From Brewer,

The Tenta Sei is a 36-line poem with the following format…

– Six sestets (or 6-line stanzas).
– Each sestet has the following rhyme pattern: ababcc.
– Each line in the first stanza makes the first line in its corresponding stanza. So line 1 is the first line of the first stanza; line 2 is the first line of the second stanza; etc. (So a little like the cascade poem.)

This Place

the dirt path calls and leads the way
a gentle rain cascades my head
these trees are my place today
feet not knowing what lie ahead
everything glistens and is slippery
the forest on both sides thickly

a gentle rain cascades my head
trees rising up on either side
birds calling to each other overhead
ferns cover the floor, intent to hide
moss-green fallen trunks lie
all things alive must die

these trees are my place today
their world bursting with sound
what is means I cannot say
the cacophony of small birds drown
a small voice in my mind
searching for meaning, looking to find

feet not knowing what lie ahead
hands wrinkled and skin loose
but this I do not dread
my hands still strong, still of use
I am like the taller of the trees
mature and majestic if you’ll please

everything glistens and is slippery
the air crisp and cool
one could almost say wintery
all my plans made minuscule
by branches bare but strong
the woodpecker urging me along

the forest on both sides thickly
much like my middle-aged waist
my time here over too quickly
my journey’s end awaits in haste
petrichor rising like grace
a parting gift of this place

I am on a personal challenge to explore and write in 100+ different poetic forms.  To assist me in this journey is Robert Lee Brewer’s The Complete Guide of Poetic Forms where he gives the form and an example. This Place is #24 in this collection I’m calling, very simply, 100+ Poetic Forms.
