Throwback Friday, By the Waters Edge (“Tullawalla”)

Here’s a poem I wrote in 2016, while I was temporarily staying back in the original family homestead with my older brother, and I was in limbo and still trying to find myself another place to live.

By the Water’s Edge (Tullawalla)

I’m in this isolation cabin

Like a big mosquito larva

Ready to burst

Surrounded by sand and sea

And a river mouth

Tidal and free

And I share my daily bread

A share for you, and for them

Thoughts of you

I gaze down upon the sandy ground

I see your white lily unbound

I’m tangled in this cocoon

Like an angry dragonfly

Waiting to break free

Surrounded by watergrass and weed

Tea-tree and dunes, far as the eye can see

And a garden bed

Grown from seed

And I share my weekly menu

A share for you, and for them

Thoughts of you

I stare down upon a fallen brave

I see your lonely bower cave

Ivor Steven (c) Nov 2016

G’day, and welcome to my blog site. My name is Ivor Steven, I live in Geelong, Australia. I’m an ex-industrial chemist, and a retired plumber, and a former Carer of my wife(Carole), for 30 years, who suffered from severe MS. I Write poetry about those personal thoughts, throughout and beyond my life as a Carer. I’ve been blogging for over 2 years, and writing poems for 19 years. Of course a lot of my poems are about my favourite subject Carole, but since I’ve been blogging my writings have become quite varied, humourous, mystical, observational, and even a few monster/horror poems. View all posts by ivor20

  1. Ivor, a beautiful and heartfelt expression of love and loss. Grieving, alone, displaced, trying to cope with everyday life, and knowing that life will never be the same again. This poem is so relatable to my own experiences with the loss of my husband. So many parallels.

The life you have built for yourself…the cozy home filled with mementos, music, and flowers in the yard; the beautiful poems and photographs that bring joy to others; your volunteer work and service to your community…The way you live your life honor’s Carole’s memory in a most meaningful way!

    • Oh wow dear Cheryl… your lovely comments have overwhelmed me… as I reach for another tissue box…

      My empty hands are full
      Of memories and rhymes

“How many rivers of tears must we cry
Before all the deepest wells run dry”

      Cheers. Ivor…
