You Got Some Chalk? By Donna Matthews

Last month I started a personal challenge to explore and write in 100+ different poetic forms.  To assist me in this journey is Robert Lee Brewer’s The Complete Guide of Poetic Forms where he gives the form and an example. You Got Some Chalk #4 is this collection I’m calling, very simply, 100+ Poetic Forms.

Today’s form is called The Bop: From The Academy of American Poets, “the bop is a poetic form that was developed by poet Afaa Michael Weaver at a Cave Canem summer retreat. Not unlike the Shakespearean sonnet in trajectory, the Bop is a form of poetic argument consisting of three stanzas, each stanza followed by a repeated line, or refrain, and each undertaking a different purpose in the overall argument of the poem.” Read here for the basic rules.

My first attempt:

The Bop

You Got Some Chalk?

we are a people in fear
fear in the creating of beautiful
we’re trapped by the lies of perfection
but what in this world is perfect?
perfect is elusive
perfect found only in the eye of the beholder

you got some chalk?

we’re ensnared in a cycle of competence
only attempting the assured
to try is to break the inertia
the pen heavy in our hand
the blank page mocking our desire
our travels have worn us out
the judgments of others
the inner critic screaming for passivity

you got some chalk?

every single breathing human
our talents loaned to us; to be used up and returned
they were familiar and fascinating when you were young
but you lost track of them, on your way to now
eyes, hands, ears, voice, feet, bodies, heart, mind
your creative self desperate to be let out to play

you got some chalk?

Now to you…wanna try The Bop?  I’d love to see what you create!
