why poems?
a bread crumb trail back to me
what did I see?
what caught my fancy?
the cerulean hue of the spring sky
a babe’s cheeks in the cool shade
the bright red cardinal from the corner of my eye
a boy lost in his imagination
people watching behind sunglasses
what stories will I tell?
what will be remembered?
my words, my witness, my testimony
my poems

Author’s Notes: I adore this quote by Nicole Lyons, “I hope that someday when I am gone, someone, somewhere, picks my soul up off these pages and thinks, I would have loved her.” The words we leave behind, pieces of our soul, for our children, their children, and maybe even their children are so very precious…therefore, I implore you, keep writing and writing and writing 💙
The above poem is written in free verse which means poetry with no rhyme scheme or meter. You can learn more about poetry forms here.

I wish I could write poetry. Although I read someone that poets have a high rate of Suicide. Think it was in Malcolm Gladwell book but I’m not sure!

I’m of the thought everybody should write…and if not writing, creating in some way… painting, sculpting, gardening…something. We were created to create. And as far as suicide… yikes… I’d be much more depressed if I didn’t have the outlet of poetry and prose!

Beautiful poem, Donna. Writing and reading poetry, and being creative is an outlet for me. I wouldn’t be depressed but I would be bored without it.

Beautiful! I’ve wonder this as well… will our words capture part of ourselves that can live even beyond our passing?
