Maybe Again Tomorrow, by Donna Matthews

Featured Image - Maybe

maybe I’ll wake up
savor a hot cup of coffee
in the quiet morning light
watch the birds and squirrels
spar fight over the fallen seed

maybe I’ll grab the babe
my son’s son
living with me,
with his dad
and his mom

maybe later we’ll go for a walk
see more birds, perhaps a dog
from across the street
keeping our distance
6 feet

maybe when he sleeps
I’ll work from home
the bedroom office
files stacked on the dresser
pens mixed with jewelry
a pillow my desk

maybe for dinner
we’ll eat pot roast and green beans
delivered by his great-grandma
in her well-used crock-pot
she’s a much better chef
than me

maybe a story after bath
a quick one
about a moon and a cow

maybe again tomorrow
we’ll do the same
maybe
maybe not

Author’s Notes: While I long for freedom, I don’t want to forget these days…days of new rhythms, relative health and safety in the midst of a pandemic, and the ever reminder of how precious our today is…not to squander because, sooner than later, maybe tomorrow doesn’t look the same.

The above poem is written in free verse which means poetry with no rhyme scheme or meter. You can learn more about poetry forms here.
