THROWBACK FRIDAY: Dirty Shoes, by Donna Matthews

Dirty Shoes

unspeakable pain
soiled shoes; devoured dreams
come in from the dark

* Written this time last year, these are the shoes of a loved one living within mental illness and, while not quite homeless, I found her living in squalid conditions. She’s better today but still continues to battle her bipolar demons.

Similar to Haiku in structure (an unrhymed poetic form consisting of 17 syllables arranged in three lines of 5-7-5 syllables respectively), a Senryu is generally more focused on human nature and tends to be more ironic or satirical. Learn more about poetry styles here.
