Go outside and play – magical words when you’re a child – unheard as an adult.
But is it really? Go out in the world and play. Like playing a character in a theatrical performance or on film…we slip into characters from the moment we wake up.
And like in many superhero films and theatre, we complete the character with a mask. And like in the movies, our masks hide the real person and turn the character into something superhero-like. Clarke Kent turns into Superman. The message is that Clarke is not very useful until behind his Superman mask…well, he’s Superman. I get it, I really do – who doesn’t want to be SUPER? Who doesn’t want to be the amazingly have it all together person in real life? It’s simply not possible – and rather boring if we’re completely honest with each other.
Not convinced you’re wearing a mask…
There’s the mask of having it all together… an old personal favorite of mine.
The mask of I can handle this all by myself…it’s hard to accept help from others…or to even admit we need help.
The identity mask – if you really knew me you wouldn’t like me
The career mask – this is the career expected of me so I’ll make it work
The parent mask – trying to be the expected parent instead of marching to our own drum.
And on and on.
It’s the weekend – go play – but like when we were children. Without care of what everyone else is doing, full of laughter and freedom, for enjoyment and recreation, without a mask.
