life’s impermanence
wild joy of surrender
works burning away
days long forgotten in time
a smoldering ash remains

Author’s Notes: What do you do with your old journals? I have piles and piles of pages ranging from my early 20s to my now almost over 40s. I’ve always hesitated to throw them out or otherwise destroy them…you know, just in case. But I never go back and read them. And if perchance I do go back and pick one up, the words are often cringeworthy and written by another person no longer here. And heaven forbid I die suddenly and they fall into careless hands. So I’ve decided to burn them…burn them all up in my patio chiminea.
The above poem is written in the form of tanka. The tanka form is generally a short poem with the following pattern 5-7-5-7-7. In its purest form, tanka poems are most commonly written as expressions of gratitude, love, or self-reflection and can be read forward and backwards. Learn more about poetry styles here.

Yes, ’tis true, but what if you view your words like your children and a gift from the Universe – no matter how unattractive they appear to you at your current place in life? Wouldn’t this be sort of like having drawn a number of self portraits of yourself from the time you were a child to the time that you are now an accomplished artist? Ha! I’m sure this is just me?? LOL! Have a great day!

I will have to think about this further? I think my wife would side with you! LOL!
