Signs of Absolution – Michele Vecchitto

Searching each face for signs of absolution
a welcome pursuit as she chases fate
The crowd gathers in silence, a ceremonial arrival
as she eases into dirty water

A welcome pursuit as she chases fate
Anticipation seizes unholy energy,
always the same ritual in this current climate
That black water won’t wash away her sins

Anticipation seizes unholy energy
as each gathers a stone
That black water won’t wash away her sins
even as she searches each face for signs of absolution

  1. The repeated search for absolution and black water leaves me with images of stoning and dunking, witchcraft trials and the inquisition. Really evocative poem.
