Femme- Liyona

“shut up”

you said.

those words

rang, rung, gonged

and gagged

any sense of self

I had left

“shut up”

again

again

over and over

beating around

“Don’t you say it”

you spat

in my face.

I stared at the cement

under my feet

and lifted my

head to square off

your gaze

head like lead

hands in tight fists

I filled my lungs with air

no mountain ain’t high

enough

“WE ALL SHOULD BE FEMINISTS”

I screamed

the spit

on my lips

hit your nose

where I let anger

fly from my lips

and I was fighting with words now.

I stared

no blink

in my eye

“WE ALL SHOULD BE FEMINISTS”

I cried

never to

be silenced

never again.
