somewhere between shadow and light harnesses the power of short sentiments and detailed illuminations of the soul. Love, lust and sensuality float alongside loss, grief and fury in this collection; showcasing the kaleidoscopic nature of human experience.
The theme I felt permeated the entire collection, however, was liberation. There are pieces which explore the liberation of your body, your sexuality, your soul and your independence; all of which are incredibly powerful. Faer speaks as a woman who knows her own mind – a woman who has already learnt much from life.
Poems like ‘Cocoon’ and ‘Slip’ celebrated growth honestly, reminding the reader healing ‘isn’t linear’. Beside these short yet poignant poems are much longer pieces which I personally found to be the crowning glory of this collection. Faer certainly has a way with words; her longer pieces (like ‘Shield’) weave stories we can all relate to rather than sharing isolated experiences. The lines ‘strange/as not caged’ resonated with me in particular; the sense of being imprisoned for so long, freedom feels alien. Yet, we grasp for it and learn to become accustomed to the new, unfamiliar taste before finally calling it home.
All in all, somewhere between shadow and light is a journey of loss and of healing documented gorgeously by a writer who I look forward to seeing more from in the future.
