AN AWKWARD SILENCE

By Charles Robert Lindholm

He Sat Alone
In Darkness
Waiting
On A Loveseat
While He
Watched
The Last Moments
Of The Night
Being Chased Away
By The Light
Of An Approaching
Dawn

Arriving
Unannounced
To The Unexpected
Emptiness
Of His Apartment
He Turned
To Lock
The Unlocked
Front Door
Before
He Could
No Longer Stand
And Face
The Truth

And So
He Waited
In The Awkward
Silence
For The Knock
On The Door
He Knew
Was Coming,
With A Sadness
In His Heart

And After
The Morning
Had Come
He Heard
The Door Knob
Turn And Then
A Bump,
And Then
A Long Pause
Before A Knock
On The Door

The Awkward
Silence
Of Waiting
Had Finally Ended

And As He
Opened The Door
To A Woman
In A White
Bathrobe

No Words
Were Needed
To Explain
The Truth
And No Lies
Were Offered

And An Awkward
Silence
Had Begun
Again

That Would Not Have
A Happy Ending
