MY ADDRESS BOOK IS SHRINKING

By Charles Robert Lindholm

I Have An Address Book
It’s Not A Little Black Book
That I Wish Was Filled With
The Names Of Wonderful
Girls And Women I Had
Relations With Through
The Years

That Would Be
A Great Inspiration
For My Writing
With Dreams
And Memories

No,
Just A Regular
Address Book
Of Friends And Family
Mundane Information
Names, Numbers And Addresses
And Now Email Addresses Too

I’ve Been Lucky
Through The Years
Until Recently
To Not Have Lost
Too Many Of My
Friends And Family
To Time And The Realities
Of Life

I Guess Christmas
This Year Hit Me Hard
With The Truth Of Mortality
And My Place
On The Circle Of Life

Sending Out Christmas Cards,
(Old Fashioned Me),
Made Me Realize
That My Address Book
Is Shrinking

The Lights
In My Life
Are Dwindling
And Many
Have Gone Out

It Makes Me
Sad To Know
That There Are
Fewer Friends
And Family
On Life’s Journey
With Me

As My Address Book
Is Shrinking
I Find I Have
More Votive Candles
Burning
In The Cathedral
Of My Heart

  1. This reminds me of a scene in my favorite movie Amelie, when a man erases names of friends who have died from his address book. A sad sentiment, certainly, but also one that reminds us to live while we can. To reach out to those friends we haven’t and say hi. Who knows that may be the day the friend needs you the most.

    • I always love reading your comments!!! So wise and right on the mark!! Interesting movie. I shall have to check it out! Yes, Live, Love, Laugh! My favorite motto now is “Life is too short to be Anything but happy!” Friends and family are part of that Happy!
