By Charles Robert Lindholm
take the gun
and load it
put the bullets in
each one in the chamber
capable of ending
our life together
forever
designed for that purpose
ready for the use of deadly force
although I have some doubts
I file the papers for divorce
deadly weapon
armed
waiting for use
as the days tick slowly by
I put the plan in motion
forced to load the gun
with paper bullets that have my name on them
forced to wait
hoping for a reprieve
loaded
ready
aimed
at “us”
waiting to fire
clever how you’ve forced my hand
to load and hold the gun
pull the trigger when you’re ready
I can’t
you’ll have to be the one

Made me feel a bit sad, but beautifully written.

Thank you for your comment! I appreciate your sentiments for sure! Sort of like a musical piece written in a minor key. Beautiful but with a sense of melancholy.

That Sir is an apt and fitting description of that very raw time from my past and what it inspired! Thanks for commenting!

Your poem marries the personal with the political, your own angst with that of the nation. Good work, Chuck.

A realistic look at a failed relationship. You superbly addressed a volatile subject.
